During September 2005, Walton Elementary/Middle School's Student Council and National Junior Honor Society organized and sponsored a school-wide service project designed to help other students who have been displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The "We've Got Your Back" campaign was well received by staff, students and parents. Thanks to donations of backpacks, school supplies, and other personal items by both staff, students, and parents, we were able to send 45 backpacks to Hoggs Middle School, Houston, Texas, where they will be distributed to students from Louisiana and Mississippi who have temporarily relocated to that area.
The following is an e-mail received on October 28, 2005:

My name is Joan Strutton and I am an elementary school counselor in Texarkana,
Texas. Because of the hurricanes, our school enrolled several students who had
to evacuate from their home towns. Some back packs and school supplies we
received had a letter stating that your Student Council and National Junior
Honor Society had selected the “We’ve Got Your Back” campaign as a service
project and I wanted to write and thank you for your help. My school, C.K.
Bender Elementary, in the Liberty-Eylau ISD wants to let you know we are so
appreciative of the time, effort, and donations you so willingly provided.
With deepest sincerity,
Joan Strutton, Counselor
