                                                                            Reading Tips for Parents

Read yourself.  When your kids see you reading the newspaper or curling up with a book, they will want to follow your example.

Make sure that your children read to you or someone else daily.  Reading, like shooting baskets and playing the piano, is a skill.  Children who spend at least 30 minutes a day reading for fun develop the skills to be better readers at school.

Read to your child everyday.  No child is to young or too old!  Everyone enjoys hearing a story read aloud.  A good time to read to your child is just before bed, but if that doesn't fit your schedule, anytime will do!!!!

Make sure that everyone in your family has a library card.  Schedule regular trips to the library and bookmobile.  Encourage your child to bring home books from school.  Showing an interest in your child's books promotes reading and learning.  Help the remember the importance of getting books back in on time.

Give books as gifts. Celebrate books!  Celebrate reading!  Celebrate learning!

Find a special place that your children can keep their books.  It can also be fun to try sorting and shelving books in different ways: by size, author, color, topic and so on.

Have a reading light in your children's room so that they can read anytime.

Make reading a privilege.  Say, "You can stay up 15 minutes later tonight if you read in bed."  Or you might say, "Because you helped with the dishes, I have time to read you an extra story tonight."
