Roane County Schools
Kevin Campbell K-8, Principal
David Tupper, 9-12 Principal
Students will be assigned to the Alternative Learning Center (ALC), (1) when their behavior reaches a Level 4 in Roane County Schools' Discipline Policy; (2) if a new student was enrolled in an ALC placement prior to coming to Roane County Schools; (3) re-enrollment after dropping out; and (4) expulsion.
Each student referred to the ALC will be given a formal hearing with student, parent, ALC staff, referring school staff and County Office representative. The purpose of the meeting is to verify behaviors leading up to the Level 4 of the discipline policy and to discuss: (a) the referral from the school, (b) to present operation rules and responsibilities of the ALC, and (c) to mutually develop a Behavior Management Plan. If the referral is a special education student, the committee becomes the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) team and appropriate changes are made in the IEP.
Students must stay in the ALC placement for one grading period. Students earn daily points for academics and appropriate behaviors i.e., time on task, attitude, cooperation, and organization. When the student reaches the final ten days of their stay in the center, they must earn 8 points per day to be considered eligible to return to their regular school. If the student is a repeat referral to the ALC within the school year, the student will remain in the ALC for the remainder of the school year. If a student has not earned the required 8 points per day prior to the close of the school year, the student must return to the ALC for the first grading period of the following year.
